Winter destination: Reit im Winkl/Bavaria

pferdeSummer is over, winter is approaching and it’s time for travel loving boomers to make their plans.

The choice is clearly between a destination with hot climate and a snow paradise.

For those of you who fall into the latter category and fancy a location in Europe, the south of Germany offers a lot of choices.

In Bavaria you’ll find several smaller resorts with cozy hotels, skiing at all levels, long hiking paths, frozen lakes and trips on sleighs, winter sports, fun, entertainment and Christmas Markets for singles, couples and families with kids.

One of my favotires is Reit im Winkl.

Reit im Winkl

The skiing paradise in the south of Bavaria was first put on the map internationally thanks to ‘Gold Rosi’, Rosi Mittermaier an alpine skiing champion, who won two Gold medals in the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck Austria.

A fresh faced always smiling young woman, with trade mark dimples, the nation went wild after her first medal.

As the name indicates, Reit im Winkl (winkel meaning nook in English), the town is located

Rosi, Rosi, noch einmal, es war so wunderschön!! (Rosi do it again, it was so wonderful) was the chant which could be heard everywhere.

And Rosi obliged and won a second medal. She did, of course, hail from Reit im Winkel where she still lives.

Reit is a rather small resort which means that even in the height of the winter season the numerous ski lifts never have long queues.

In addition, Reit sports the longest sleigh track in all of Germany and many kilometers of well sign posted cross country skiing paths.

Enjoy the typical, rural architecture of the south of Bavaria and the trade mark church of St. Pankras.

When the sporting activities make you hungry, you’ll find no shortage of restaurants where you can enjoy a hearty Brotzeit.

To make the Bavaria experience complete, you may want to listen to the folklore duo Margot and Maria Hellwig at night or jodel with Takeo Ishi, a Japanese in Lederhosen and Tiroler Hut.

A great day trip from Reit im Winkl is to the idyllic Chiemsee and Prien am Chiemsee with its popular Christmas market.
Reit im Winkl is easily reached along the B8 from either Munich or Salzburg, exit Bernau
